Dr. Hughes is a cardiologist with an interest in advanced cardiac imaging working in the Blackrock Health Galway Clinic and Sligo University Hospital. After completing his medical degree at the RCSI, Dr. Hughes pursued general cardiology training in Ireland before undertaking a 2 year advanced imaging fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in the USA. He is fully accredited with the European Society of Cardiology for Transthoracic Echocardiography and for Transoesophageal Echocardiography, and has attained the highest level of training for Cardiac CT and cardiac MRI.

Dr. Hughes completed a two year integrated fellowship at the internationally renowned Clinic Cleveland in Ohio in the USA. This included gaining expertise in Cardiac CT, Cardiac MRI, diagnostic echocardiography and structural imaging.
