Going Forward - Expansion Programme

"We want or patients, staff and Consultants to have access to the best facilities - that's why we committed €100 million to a five year expansion plan which commenced in 2007"

Currently the hospital is in the midst of a €100 million major expansion and refurbishment programme funded over a five year period. The expansion programme includes an additional three new floors, which includes a state of the art day care unit,  a multistorey car park (completed in 2008), an extended Intensive care unit and a newly constructed Central Decontamination unit (CDU) which will conform to the highest international standards.

The planned hospital development will facilitate a 42% increase in beds at the hospital bringing the total number of beds to over 160. When the project is completed Blackrock Clinic will be the first major acute hospital in Ireland to accommodate all inpatients in single rooms, providing improved comfort and privacy as well as reducing the chance of infection. The scheme also incorporates two new operating theatres in a state of the art day care unit which will result in a 40% increase in the availability of theatre space.

In addition, a programme of extensive refurbishment will take place throughout the existing hospital building. An overhaul of the restaurant has been completed, the reception area has been renovated. Work will commence shortly on the first and second floors.

CDU
The construction of a new larger CDU will make the supply of reliably sterilized articles available at the required time and place for any agreed purpose in the hospital. Two dedicated lifts will be constructed which will provide a direct link to the new day unit on the 5th floor from the CDU in the lower ground floor. This will ensure that the equipment required can be transported seamlessly between the two areas to maximise the efficiency of both departments.

Expansion of the Intensive Care Unit
The intensive care unit will extend to cover an area of almost 750 square metres. This will increase the bed capacity by 20% and will afford the staff increased space to provide the specialist nursing care that is required by these high risk patients. The total investment in the unit will be approximately €9million, proving the hospital's commitment to the highest standards of medical technology.

This range of projects not only strengthens existing services at the clinic but will also introduce greater patient capacity, improved facilities and ultimately a first class environment for patients, doctors and staff alike. The expansion is testament to the commitment to excellence in the delivery of acute surgical, medical and diagnostic services.
