Ultrasound Imaging
Real time ultrasound imaging is an exciting innovative tool to allow patients to see muscles working in action on the screen. This imaging is used in patients with low back pain or in pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation
- When the spine is not working correctly or has been injured, the muscles that support the spine are switched off. Even when back pain resolves, these muscles do not switch back on themselves
- Ultrsound imaging allows the patient to see the muscles they are working in action on screen and learn to improve the pattern of contraction of the muscles
- Realtime ultrasound imaging can help specifically retrain these control muscles thereby reducing the recurrence of lower back pain
Ultrasound imaging can also be used as an assessment and rehabilitation tool in women with pelvic floor dysfunction.
- The image can be an efffective visual feedback to the patient to assist with the correct pattern of contracting and relaxing the pelvic floor muscles
- Ultrasound can also be an objective measure of how the muscle is contracting and thereby provide a motivational tool to improve as you adhere to your rehabilitaion programme at home
