Orthopaedic Physiotherapy


The orthopaedic inpatient physiotherapy team consists of experienced chartered physioherapists (MISCP) and physiotherapy assistants. The team will help you to regain your mobility and restore your independence after surgery by following a comprehenisve rehabilitation programme. The physiotherapy team are here to help you return to daily acitivitiesby increasing your mobility and strength following your operation.

We provide a seven day orthopaedic inpatient physiotherapy service. We work together with other members of the medical team including doctors and nurses to ensure your rehabilitation progresses satisfactorily. On the orthopaedic floor an extensive range of surgery is performed. The most common types of surgery include:

  • Total hip replacement
  • Total knee replacement
  • Hip resurfacing
  • Spinal surgery
  • Day case arthroscopic surgery
  • Shoulder surgery

Physiotherapy treatment can range from:

  • Pre and post operative assessment
  • Advice and education
  • Exercise programme
  • Progressing mobility by use of walking from frame to sticks or crutches
  • Stairs assessment
  • Falls assessment
  • Supplying and fitting braces and splints

Patients are assessed in our pre-assessment clinic prior to surgery and will receive daily intensive physiotherapy as inpatients to progress their mobility to maximise their functional recovery.

Patients can continue their rehabilitation as an outpatient when this is appropriate and continunity of care is ensured.
