Professional Profile

Emmet McGrath graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 1998. He completed his early postgraduate medical training in Dublin before undertaking his specialist registrar training in Respiratory Medicine in Sheffield, UK. In 2005 he was awarded a prestigious Wellcome Trust Clinical Training Fellowship to evaluate the role of neutrophils in inflammatory lung disease. This research led to the award of multiple travel and young investigator awards from the Irish, British, European and American Thoracic Societies. He was awarded a PhD for this work in 2009. He continued in the role of NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Respiratory Medicine at the University of Sheffield.

In 2010 he was appointed to an academic post as Senior Lecturer in Respiratory Medicine at the University of Birmingham and Consultant Respiratory Physician at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and the Birmingham Chest Clinic. He was Clinical Lead for Interstitial and Occupational Lung disease at this tertiary referral centre until his return to Dublin as a Consultant Respiratory Physician at St Vincent’s University Hospital in 2013.

He is clinical lead of the Acute Medicine Unit in St Vincent’s University Hospital and is an Associate Clinical Professor at UCD. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine. He has more than 50 peer-reviewed publications.

He practices in all areas of Respiratory and General Medicine.
