Investment of €4.5m in a Hybrid Operating Theatre
24th Apr 2014
Blackrock Clinic is the first Independent hospital in Dublin to have built a Hybrid Operating Theatre. This means that the imaging required to see and diagnose patients is within the operating theatre, allowing surgeons to perform both open and minimally-invasive (keyhole) surgery.
These procedures include Endovascular Aneurysm Repairs (EVAR) which can fix a life-threatening abdominal aortic aneurysm and Angioplasties which open a patient’s blocked or narrowed arteries using a catheter and a balloon. Both of these minimally invasive procedures can be performed in the Hybrid operating theatre with a much shorter, if not halved, recovery time for the patient.
This is the first Hybrid Operating Theatre in Ireland to use new technology which reduces radiation dose to the patient by up to 80%. This is a significant break-through for patient and staff safety.
