Blackrock Clinic introduced TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) in 2008. However, only after lengthy negotiations with health insurers could the Clinic introduce TAVI as a service covered by certain insurance policies (dependent upon the patient’s plan). This happened in late 2011.

TAVI is a highly effective new heart valve replacement via catheter procedure. A year-long study conducted by Edwards the producers of the heart valves, showed that

• Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) significantly reduces the rates of death compared with standard therapy
• TAVI offers results similar to surgical Aortic Valve Replacement (AVR)
• TAVI patients experience substantially better quality of life after the procedure
• TAVI patients cardiovascular and physical health improvements are roughly comparable to a 10 year reduction in age
