Ireland Women’s Hockey Development Squad overcomes challenges to beat Wales
23rd Jul 2021
Following on from last week’s preview of the Ireland Women’s Hockey Development Squad weekend fixtures against the Welsh Senior team in Belfast, everyone at Blackrock Clinic was delighted to hear that the Junior Green Army prevailed in the series.
Ireland won the opening game on Friday courtesy of a goal from Orla Macken seven minutes from time. The Welsh team was victorious in the second match, before Ireland won the decisive final game on Sunday to take the series.
The victory came despite the fact that nine players were deemed close contacts following their return flight from their Five Nations tournament in Spain and were therefore unavailable for selection.
The 18 players who were eventually chosen for the squad played superbly, and their commanding performances throughout the weekend pointed to a very bright future indeed.
Pulling together and beating the odds, this group of players has made everybody connected with them enormously proud, including Blackrock Clinic, which has been sponsoring the Development Squad since 2017, and which was delighted to welcome two of the players – Caitlin Sherin and Lisa Mulcahy – last week.
The Development Squad plays a vital role in bringing through the next generation of players and all at Blackrock Clinic are sure that bright days lie ahead, as the busy summer continues this week with another round of games, this time against the Welsh U23s.
