New Emergency Department Opens at Blackrock Clinic
4th Jul 2010
The Clinical Director of the new unit is Mr Aidan Gleeson, who is also a Clinical Consultant at Beaumont Hospital’s Accident & Emergency Department. Speaking at the opening, Bryan Harty, Chief Executive of Blackrock Clinic said that the introduction of the Emergency Department would provide patients living in the Dublin area with the option to avail of stress free, easily accessible top class emergency treatment. “Patients wil be seen within a maximum of one hour and can be reassured that they will receive a speedy diagnosis and the best possible specialist care in a relaxed and calm environment.
The opening of the Emergency Unit is part of the hospital’s €100m expansion programme which entailed the construction of three new floors in the main hospital. The expansion has facilitated a new purpose built day surgery unit catering for up to 100 patients a day which opened last month,as well as two new operating theatres, resulting in a 40% increase in availability of theatre space.
The final phase of the expansion programme is now underway and when completed at the end of the Summer will result in a 42% increase in beds, at the hospital, bringing the total number of beds to 160. When the project is completed, Blackrock Clinic will be the first major acute hospital to accommodate all inpatients in single rooms, providing improved comfort and privacy as well as reducing the chance of infection.
The Emergency Unit will initially open 9am-6pm weekdays and is available to patients over 14 years of age. An initial fee applies and almost all health insurance policies (equivalent VHI band B o higher) provide cover for any further treatments provided to patients.
