Once again, the day was all about enjoying rugby! Blackrock Clinic are proud sponsors of Willow Park’s 39th ‘Fr Gavin Rugby Festival’

28th Mar 2022

Blackrock Clinic was delighted to support our neighbours Willow Park Junior School over the weekend as sponsors of their latest under 12s rugby fixture of 2022, the 39th ‘Father Gavin Rugby Festival’.

Mouth-guards, boots and scrum-caps were the order of the day, with a structure nurturing inclusion, participation and suitable competition.

One of the biggest rugby festivals of its kind in Europe, the event saw over 500 fifth form boys from across the country competing in the mammoth rugby blitz. Over 35 teams took their positions across Willow Park’s nine pitches.

Referees and helpers were all stalwart volunteers, along with a crew of medical consultants manning the medical tent.

Sportsmanship shone through from all players under the guidance of Willow Park Games Master Mr. Rory Crinion. It was a full day event, this year with an eye on sustainability, with reusable BPA free water bottles supplied for the players. The sun made a stunning appearance, adding to the festivities for players, their families, friends, and supporters of Willow Park.

The festival was first organised by its namesake Father Gavin, who ensured that every boy participated in the tournament regardless of their ability. The most important factor, Father Gavin insisted, was that the boys at Willow Park all had a chance to experience being part of a team. True to that spirit, every player who competed was given a medal and a gift bag at the end of the day to mark their participation in the Festival.

Rugby is an essential part of the life and ethos of Willow Park Junior School, which enjoys a strong tradition in the game, and an alumni including current and former international players such as Luke Fitzgerald, Brian O’Driscoll, Leo Cullen, Hugo McNeill, Victor Costello and Fergus Slattery.

The game’s core values of respect, discipline, enjoyment and teamwork are at the heart of the school.
