Radiotherapy
Radiotherapy is a specialised treatment and is not available in all hospitals, including Blackrock Clinic. Your oncology team in Blackrock clinic will work with the radiation oncologist. Arrangements will be made for you to have your radiotherapy as an inpatient or outpatient.
Radiotherapy is the use of high energy x-rays to shrink or eliminate tumours. These high energy rays are produced by a machine called a linear accelerator and are able to destroy cancer cells. Treatment is usually given over a short period of time to have the greatest effect on the cancer cells.
Radiation treatment is individually planned for each patient prescribed by a radiation oncologist.
